Estate Planning

Here’s what happened. I went in to my filing cabinet and said, “Here’s what we’re going to do.” And I began to read my mothers estate-planning documents (she had previously executed her will, living will, medical power attorney, and a general power of attorney) starting with her general power of attorney. My mom had raised seven very independent children and she had planned for an event of this very sort. As I read the documents, it was very clear this wasn’t me speaking, this was mom. There was no confusion, no unanswered questions, and no arguments. Mom was very clear how things were to be handled and by whom. The point I want to make here is that my mom didn’t have these documents prepared just for her, but for us seven children as well. She did it for us. By having her affairs in order, even while she was in a coma, she was able to continue to keep peace at home and not leave her children wondering, “What do we do now?” Mom had left clear directions, and though it wasn’t necessarily easy for us in every regard, it definitely made things a lot easier.
